Holding Pattern

Here are worship materials for the 5th Sunday after Pentecost.

"The Bride," Marc Chagall, 20th c.

Call to Worship Psalm 130 Adapted

One: Out of the depths we cry to you, O God. All: O God, hear our voice!

One: Let your ears be attentive to the voice of our supplications! All: If you, O God, should mark iniquities, who could stand?

One: But there is forgiveness with you, so you’re to be revered.

All: We wait for God.

One: Our souls wait, and in God's word we hope;

All: our souls wait for God more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.

One: O beloved, hope in God! All: For with God there is steadfast love.

One: With God is great power to redeem. All: It is God who will redeem history of all its iniquities.

One: Thus it will be as we proclaim in greeting one another,

“The peace of the Lord be with you.”

All: And also with you.

Prayer of Invocation (in unison)

Gracious God, gather us to be your people now, faithful witnesses to your power to redeem and conducive of your power to restore. The world would aim to thwart your good will. Grant instead that yours will prevail and that we might take part in that.

We confess our tendency to fall short in this regard. We discourage the works of love. We scoff at the possibility of renewal and mock the promise of the miraculous. The pains of the world have us defended against your loving persistence that all shall be well.

Cure us of this sin-sickness, and heal us of our wounded defensiveness. Forgive us and encourage us in your mercy and fullness. Bless us that we might bless the world, as you would have us do. In Christ, whose healing way freely flowed, we pray. Amen.
